2006 Water & Wastewater Program

The 2006 Water & Wastewater Program provides members with exclusive information tools and access to industry experts to help them enhance their relationships with municipal and industrial water & wastewater treatment facilities, which account for 5% of U.S. electricity use. Because their electricity consumption is expected to grow 20% over the next 15 years, and because electricity is already their second largest operating cost, water and wastewater treatment facilities actively seek assistance from their electric utilities to accommodate this growth, improve their energy efficiency, and comply with stringent environmental regulations.

For over ten years, the Water & Wastewater Program has served energy companies as a "go-to" source of information and technical support on energy efficiency, innovative end-use technology applications and demonstrations, energy trends, and regulatory developments impacting the water and wastewater treatment sector. The Program provides energy companies with expertise to retain and grow load, promote regional economic development, and develop new business opportunities with water & wastewater treatment facilities. The Program has made significant contributions in the development, demonstration, and deployment of advanced electrotechnologies and practices that improve treatment processes, minimize environmental impacts, improve energy effeciency, including: (a) ultraviolet (UV) water treatment, which reduces chemical use; (b) membrane technology, an alternative to costly conventional technologies; (c) ozone water treatment, an efficienct and cost-effective alternative to chemicals; and (d) promulgation of energy management best practices that have become industry standards.
